In the age of TikTok, Instagram and foodie culture, dessert photography has become an art form in itself. Whether you're a professional photographer or someone with a sweet tooth and a smartphone, mastering the art of dessert photography can elevate your culinary creations to new heights.
I recently decided to experiment with cake pops, chocolate covered strawberries and dipped chocolate cookies so that I could see what it takes to both create the desserts and capture the images, and here are some takeaways I've learned while gaining some great experience:

Before even bringing out my camera, I had to take some time to set the stage for my dessert photography. I chose a clean and clutter-free surface as your backdrop. While this time I went for a white textured cloth, you can also choose a marble countertop, rustic wooden table, or minimalist plate to provide a visually appealing canvas for your sweet treats. Below are the first few photos I took with my iPhone while making the desserts and show the difference between these and the styled shots:

Good lighting is essential for capturing mouthwatering dessert photos. Natural light is your best friend here, so try to shoot near a window during the daytime. Strawberries specifically are best if dipped the same day, and make sure to wash & dry thoroughly to avoid any sweating!

Post-processing can enhance the visual appeal of your dessert photos, but less is often more when it comes to editing. I use Adobe Lightroom as my editing software to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation and shadows, but I try to be mindful not to overdo it. Aim for a natural, true-to-life look that accurately represents the colors and textures of your dessert.

Like any skill, mastering dessert photography takes practice. Not everything worked out like I expected it to and I learned a lot for next time! Don't be discouraged if your first few attempts don't turn out exactly as you'd hoped – keep experimenting, learning, and refining your technique.
